What Do You Have in Your Pic-i-nic Basket, Yogi?

Add to favorites

Summer was made for picnics, right? But they often end up less than flavorful with boring norms like sandwiches, veggie trays and chips. Picnics don’t have to be complicated to be delicious, and there are plenty of food options to tantalize your taste buds. So, pack up the basket and let’s dine al fresco!

Don’t put all your eggs in the wrong basket

Choosing the proper picnic basket may seem like no big deal, but to really enjoy the time, packing right is essential. For example, how you plan to carry your basket matters big time. If  heading out on a long hike to a remote destination, you’ll want a lightweight picnic backpack. But if you are just going to the local park or an outdoor concert, a simple basket with user-friendly handles works better and provides more space.

You also need to keep in mind the basket size, depending on how many people are picnicking with you. Materials, insulation and, of course, style are also important considerations.

Location, location, location

Before you figure out what delicious delicacies to take along, it’s important to find the best spot. State and local parks are great for picnics and usually offer some type of seating and sometimes pavilions for those who want shade. If you choose to sit on the ground, make sure to bring along a blanket. Taking a hike along one of Indiana’s beautiful trail systems can result in unforgettable picnic fun. Check out Indiana’s DNR website for a list of trails and parks near you. Outdoor concerts, sporting events, playgrounds, river banks, and beaches are also great places to lay out a spread.

Let’s get to the meat of it

You now have your basket and location set, but what are you going to pack? Let the food be the shining star of your picnic with these delicious ideas:

Heading out on a picnic with friends, your loved one or the kids is a great way to take in nature and enjoy a delicious meal this summer. If you want to look like a pro, throw in some bug repellant or a citronella candle, too, so the ants and mosquitos know they aren’t invited. Bon appetit!
